Sustainability

There is a growing consciousness of the negative impact the shipping industry is having on our environment. Global shipping currently accounts for approximately 3% of worldwide greenhouse gases. Growth rates indicate that this figure is set to rise to 10% by 2050. We must embrace innovative options to reduce the environmental impact of world trade.

Sustainability is at our heart. Solent Windship Co will endeavour to be both environmentally and financially sustainable, ensuring our operation can continue for many years to come.

There are a number of ways we will achieve this, from the ship's build through to our cargo operations.

Sustainable shipping

Over the years the shipping industry has had a wholly negative impact on our environment - from build, to operation, to disposal. We are all keenly aware of the emissions ships generate. While the shipping industry is making positive steps to be more environmentally friendly, there is another way.

We must embrace the opportunity to join the growing movement of developing decarbonised, sustainable transport services that can ship cargos emission free. By applying decades of sailing design evolution to design and build an extreme clipper ship, we can pave the way to transport cargos as sustainably and efficiently as possible.

Sustainable ship build

We believe building our ship in timber is more sustainable and environmentally friendly than building in steel or aluminium.

Although cutting down trees is not ideal, trees are sequestered carbon. This means trees are potentially an infinite renewable material, when sourced from sustainably managed forests. In our eyes, this is far more environmentally friendly when compared to the mining, transportation, smelting and fabrication of sourcing steel or aluminium.

To offset the loss of trees needed for the ship's construction, we will ensure that for every tree used, multiple trees will be planted to replace them.

Another way to ensure the ship's build is sustainable is the use of bio expoxy. These have a notable percentage of plant-based oil and have evolved in recent years. If we can get classification and insurance approval, we plan to use bio expoxy in the ship's construction.
